Borderlands 2 Gunzerker profiled, Siren gameplay will be 'very, very different'

Borderlands 2 Gunzerker profiled, Siren gameplay will be 'very, very different':

We saw the new Gunzerker class in the Borderlands 2 teaser trailer released way back in August, but Gearbox has shared a little more information about just how the gun-wielding brute will work. The class is a dual-wielder of weapons, but can only bring out two guns for a limited amount of time, which means the player will have to make tough decisions about which guns to wield and when. Combine an electric machine gun with a flaming shotgun to drop shields and do flame damage? Sure, why not!

There are three skill trees in the class: One has skills like "Yippe Ki Yay," which extend your berzerk mode when you make a kill. The second tree is more of a tank tree, with abilities that boost your heath and even a taunt to drive enemies to attack you (instead of weaker teammates). Finally, there's a tree called "Gun Lust" that seems targeted more towards solo play, with vampiric attacks available, and special skills like one that grants more damage to the last bullet in a clip, or another that provides extra shots with no ammo cost.

Gearbox has also confirmed that the Siren class will return to the game, but says it won't necessarily be a phasewalker like the last time out. Instead, the gameplay will be "very, very different and very, very new," according to lead writer Anthony Burch. That sounds ... ominous, no? Maybe she'll take a tip from the Dragonborn and have some singing attacks.

Stay a while and watch Diablo 3's introductory cinematic

Stay a while and watch Diablo 3's introductory cinematic:

At the Spike VGAs, some dudes from those American Pie movies awarded Blizzard with this year's Gaming God award. Mike Morhaime, Frank Pearce, and Allen Adham took to the stage to accept, revealing Diablo 3's final introductory cinematic. As you can imagine -- actually, wait, don't imagine. Just watch it above already!

Japanese hardware sales, November 21 - 27: Rampant speculation edition

Japanese hardware sales, November 21 - 27: Rampant speculation edition:

Thanks to our wonderful and incredibly good-looking commenter Haikiba, we now know that the ant we reported on earlier today was not licking its butt at all, but was actually infected by a deadly, behavior-modifying jungle fungus known as Cordyceps. The terrifying and fascinating specifics of the fungus are explained by the BBC Planet Earth clip above, which draws some interesting parallels between the ants and The Last of Us' teaser trailer.

For instance, once infected ants start behaving erratically, uninfected ants carry their spore-riddled brethren as far away from the nest as possible. This correlates with the quarantine signs shown in the trailers, and may explain the motivation behind the riots as well. We took a look at the source code for The Last of Us' official site, and besides discovering that the trailers are (unsurprisingly) hosted on SCEA servers, we also found a high-resolution image of Cordyceps fungi tucked away behind the embedded player.

The Planet Earth clip also mentions that there is a specific strain of Cordyceps fungi for each breed of insect that it infects; is The Last of Us a game about a human-calibrated species of Cordyceps? At the moment, all signs point to maybe.

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Hidden in Plain Sight

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Hidden in Plain Sight:

Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We at Joystiq believe no one deserves to starve, and many indie developers are entitled to a fridge full of tasty, fulfilling media coverage, right here. This week, Adam Spragg attempts to revive local multiplayer with an XBLIG game about looking like you're not playing a game at all, Hidden in Plain Sight.

What's your game called and what's it about?

The game is called Hidden in Plain Sight. It's a set of multiplayer game modes that share a common theme: trying to accomplish goals without drawing attention to yourself.

In each game mode, players control characters in the midst of a large group of NPCs. Players are given a task, but also the means to eliminate each other from the game. So the goal is to try to blend in with the NPCs, but still do what you're supposed to do without getting killed.

For example, one of the simplest game modes is called "Death Race." Players and NPCs are racing to be the first to cross a finish line. The naïve approach would be to simply run quickly to the finish line. However, each player has a gun with one bullet, and can eliminate one person from the race. So players want to win the race, but run the risk of being eliminated if they look like they're trying to win. (Of course, you could try a double-bluff by running way out in front, because no one would be that obvious, right?)

Other game modes create similar tension by putting players in a conflicted position of wanting to accomplish a goal, but risking elimination by doing so.

Steam grants wishes with Daily Wishlist Giveaway

Steam grants wishes with Daily Wishlist Giveaway:

Steam sales are great, but even at deep discounts you still have to pay for the games you want. Valve will give a few lucky Steam users the coveted 100% discount on the games in their wishlists, with the "Daily Wishlist Giveaway."

Here's how it works: first, make sure you have at least ten games in your Steam wishlist. Then just visit the page for each day's Daily Deal -- today it's Terraria for $2.50 -- and you'll be entered. Ten people will win their top ten games every day, from today through whenever Valve decides to start its Holiday Sale. Last year, that was December 20.
