Torchlight 2 finally has its release date of September 20
Torchlight II is coming to PCs on September 20, developer Runic Games announced. Runic president and Torchlight II designer Travis Baldree revealed the date on the game's official forum.

Torchlight II was originally intended to beat rival Diablo III to the punch by releasing last year, but after multiple delays it's now set to arrive in three weeks time. The action-RPG, which features the additions of online and local co-op, and four new character classes, is currently priced on Steam at $20. There remains no word beyond hope of a console release.

Borderlands gets demade, is playable in your browser and totally rad
You wanna play Borderlands, but you're stuck at your job. Also, the new Borderlands still isn't out, and you've played so, so much of the first one. Or maybe you're only into 16-bit games? The Borderlands remake - an official part of the Borderlands 2 marketing campaign - is here, and it's pretty boss.

Well, okay - it's as boss as a top down, 16-bit, browser-based rendition of Borderlands could possibly be. Incidentally, that's far, far more boss than we had imagined. What're you still doing here? Go play it!

Star Ratings

Star Ratings: I got lost and wandered into the world's creepiest cemetery, where the headstones just had names and star ratings. Freaked me out. When I got home I tried to leave the cemetery a bad review on Yelp, but as my hand hovered over the 'one star' button I felt this distant chill ...

Everybody Jump

Everybody Jump:

Everybody Jump

What would happen if everyone on earth stood as close to each other as they could and jumped, everyone landing on the ground at the same instant?
—Thomas Bennett (and many others)

This is one of the most popular questions submitted to this blog. It’s been examined before, including by a ScienceBlogs post and a Straight Dope article. They cover the kinematics pretty well. However, they don’t tell the whole story.

Let’s take a closer look.

At the start of the scenario, the entire Earth’s population has been magically transported together into one place.

several stick figure characters standing aroundThis crowd takes up an area the size of Rhode Island. But there’s no reason to use the vague phrase “an area the size of Rhode Island”. This is our scenario; we can be specific. They’re actually in Rhode Island.

map showing Rhode Island and with a outlined section labeled 'crowd'

At the stroke of noon, everyone jumps.

the stick figure characters, who had been standing, now jumping in a variety of poses

As discussed elsewhere, it doesn’t really affect the planet. Earth outweighs us by a factor of over ten trillion. On average, we humans can vertically jump maybe half a meter on a good day. Even if the Earth were rigid and responded instantly, it would be pushed down by less than an atom’s width.

Next, everyone falls back to the ground.

all the stick figure characters now standing again

Technically, this delivers a lot of energy into the Earth, but it’s spread out over a large enough area that it doesn’t do much more than leave footprints in a lot of gardens. A slight pulse of pressure spreads through the North American continental crust and dissipates with little effect. The sound of all those feet hitting the ground creates a loud, drawn-out roar which lasts many seconds.

Eventually, the air grows quiet.

Seconds pass. Everyone looks around.

There are a lot of uncomfortable glances. Someone coughs.

same standing stick figure characters. one says 'I should get back to Dublin', one says, in Hindi, 'Where's the airport?'

A cell phone comes out of a pocket. Within seconds, the rest of the world’s five billion phones follow. All of them—even those compatible with the region’s towers—are displaying some version of “NO SIGNAL”. The cell networks have all collapsed under the unprecedented load.

Outside Rhode Island, abandoned machinery begins grinding to a halt.

The T. F. Green airport in Providence, Rhode Island handles a few thousand passengers a day. Assuming they got things organized (including sending out scouting missions to retrieve fuel), they could run at 500% capacity for years without making a dent in the crowd.

the map of Rhode Island where the crowd was outlined with arrows signifying everyone trying to leave

The addition of all the nearby airports doesn’t change the equation much. Nor does the region’s light rail system. Crowds climb on board container ships in the deepwater port of Providence, but stocking sufficient food and water for a long sea voyage proves a challenge.

Rhode Island’s half-million cars are commandeered. Moments later, I-95, I-195, and I-295 become the sites of the largest traffic jam in the history of the planet. Most of the cars are engulfed by the crowds, but a lucky few get out and begin wandering the abandoned road network.

Some make it past New York or Boston before running out of fuel. Since the electricity is probably not on at this point, rather than find a working gas pump, it’s easier to just abandon the car and steal the new one. Who can stop you? All the cops are in Rhode Island.

The edge of the crowd spreads outward into southern Massachusetts and Connecticut. Any two people who meet are unlikely to have a language in common, and almost nobody knows the area. The state becomes a patchwork chaos of coalescing and collapsing social hierarchies. Violence is common. Everybody is hungry and thirsty. Grocery stores are emptied. Fresh water is hard to come by and there’s no efficient system for distributing it.

Within weeks, Rhode Island is a graveyard of billions.

The survivors spread out across the face of the world and struggle to build a new civilization atop the pristine ruins of the old. Our species staggers on, but our population has been greatly reduced. Earth’s orbit is completely unaffected—it spins along exactly as it did before our species-wide jump.

But at least now we know.

You did, this, Brandon.

Diablo 3 Paragon update rolling out today

Diablo 3 Paragon update rolling out today:
Diablo 3 Paragon update rolling out today
Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4, which features end-game changes announced just yesterday, is set to be released sometime today. Servers will be down for maintenance throughout the day in order to prepare for the patch.

Maintenance is already underway in North America and should be finished by 1:00pm PDT. European maintenance will run from 8:00pm PDT tonight through 6:00am tomorrow, and Asian maintenance will begin tomorrow at 11:00am PDT and run through 11:00pm. Once the maintenance is complete, the patch will begin rolling out in each region. Blizzard warns players in the Americas that global play will be inaccessible in Europe and Asia until the patch is deployed in each region.

The patch is designed to improve the experience for high-level Diablo 3 players, most notably adding the Paragon system. The system features 100 new levels for level 60 players to achieve, replete with bonuses to base stats, increased magic find and ... nifty character portrait frames. Head over to the Diablo 3 forums for the full patch notes.

Diablo 3 to add high-level 'Paragon' system featuring 100 new levels

Diablo 3 to add high-level 'Paragon' system featuring 100 new levels:
Diablo 3 adds highlevel 'Paragon' system featuring 100 additional levels
To combat the lull some players have encountered once they have reached level 60 in Diablo 3, Blizzard is adding a new layer of upgrade levels.

This new layer - called the 'Paragon System' - adds 100 additional levels for players to push through once they have reached Diablo 3's current level max. Coming in update 1.0.4, all experience earned after level 60 will be put toward the new Paragon levels. Each new level in Paragon gives players a boost in core stats (dexterity, strength, vitality, and intelligence) in amounts similar to standard levels along with a 3% boost in magic and gold find.

"It can be demoralizing to play for an hour, not get any drops, and also be out a big chunk of gold from repair costs. Your play session may not only end without an upgrade, it can wind up being a net loss," game director Jay Wilson wrote on the official blog post revealing the changes. "We know that a lot of you out there are level 60 - maybe on multiple characters - and this system provides a way to make progress every time you log in to the game."

Under the new system, Nephalem Valor bonuses give players a 15% boost in experience toward Paragon levels per stack. In comparison to Diablo 2, Wilson says that reaching the maximum Paragon level approximates the "long-term investment required to get a level 99 character" in the franchise's previous installment.

Blizzard's goal with Paragon is to have top-tier players slowly "transition away" from their reliance on magic find on items in a way that wouldn't "flip the entire game end-over end." Once 1.0.4 hits, magic find will be capped to 300% before Nephalem Valor, meaning players will hit the cap once they reach Paragon level 100 - which will allow players to slowly remove those items over time.

No date for the update has been revealed ... but as someone stuck at 60, I can confirm that it's not soon enough.

The Man with the Iron Fists - Trailer

The Man with the Iron Fists - Trailer:
The Man with the Iron Fists - Trailer

Quentin Tarantino presents The Man With the Iron Fists, an action-adventure inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by his longtime collaborators RZA and Eli Roth. Making his debut as a big-screen director, co-writer and leading man, RZA--alongside an exciting international cast led by Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu--tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero who all descend on one fabled village in China for a winner-takes-all battle for a fortune in gold. Blending astonishing martial-arts sequences from some of the masters of this world with the signature vision he brings as the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan and as one of hip-hop's most dominant figures of the past two decades, RZA embarks upon his most ambitious, stylized and thrilling project to date.
