Upcoming Diablo 3 patch increases Legendary item drop rarity

Upcoming Diablo 3 patch increases Legendary item drop rarity:
Blizzard is hard at work on the next patch for Diablo 3, version 1.0.8, but designer Travis Day and others at Blizzard thankfully took some time to detail a few of the changes coming. For one, Legendary item drops will be have increased rarity, as will Rare items. Legendary items will also be tweaked to roll base stats based on the level of the monster that dropped them. "When a Legendary drops, the question that goes through a player's mind should never be 'is this a good item?' It should be 'how awesome is it?,'" Day wrote in a blog post.

Other changes include the ability to multi-craft, for players that need to quickly craft several copies of the same recipe. You'll also be able to directly compare items you're looking to purchase against current equipment, and senior technical game designer Wyatt Cheng promises improved co-op farming mechanics.

"We are looking to improve co-op farming efficiency in 1.0.8," Cheng said in a forum post. "Co-op play in general is a big focus of the 1.0.8 patch and efficiency is definitely one component of that. Co-op is already more efficient for some players, but this is the exception rather than the norm. The degree of co-op efficiency depends heavily on the co-ordination of the party, skill builds, and the relative gear level of the teammates. Since launch we've made some modest changes to encourage co-op play but there's still room to go farther."

One of these changes is the new Identify All feature, which will ensure co-op players never need halt dungeon progression to run back to town and identify items. "Sometimes the trip back to town to sort through a bag of gear is enough of a hurdle to make somebody feel playing co-op isn't worth it. Nobody wants to be in the dungeon fighting monsters while your teammate is off in town identifying a full inventory," Cheng concluded.

At the moment, there is no official launch date for Diablo 3's 1.0.8 update.

From city-builder roles to caring for citizens in SimCity

From city-builder roles to caring for citizens in SimCity:
SimCity's peoplefocused play exposes the shortfalls of past games
Regions are the beating heart of Maxis Games' upcoming SimCity revival. The always-online game places a lot of emphasis on community, but it's less about the global fellowship and more about the ties that bind neighboring cities together.

Players face a choice when they're first starting out: break ground in a small region with only two or three city-sized plots of land to develop ,or jump into a more expansive location, one that supports as many as 16 cities. The cost/benefit for each choice is simple enough to break down; it's the difference between carving out your own, private space in the world versus leaving the door open for other players to join.

All of SimCity's regions are created in-house at Maxis - there's no plan to let players mold their own regions - and each plot of claimable land comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. A helpful status bar pop-up points out which resources are and aren't available when an unclaimed plot is highlighted, so you know what you're getting before you settle on a civilization site.

Maxis has been working to test against a whole galaxy of possibilities in the run-up to SimCity's March 5, 2013, release. It's to the point that sizable portions of the working day at the studio are now devoted purely to play, with staffers being assigned to a range of discrete city-builder roles.

"It's hard to go into every nook and cranny of the game because there's just so much. The breadth of the game is really large," lead designer Stone Librande told Joystiq. "We have different designers who are assigned to different tasks. Like, 'You're making university town, you're making casino town, you're making ore and coal mining town.'"

Gas Powered Games 'Wildman' Kickstarter canceled
Gas Powered Games canceled its Kickstarter for Wildman today, with four days and another half-million dollars in funding required to reach its goal.

"At this point, it makes sense for us to focus our attention on other ways to keep Gas Powered Games running. Unfortunately, we are unable to share any specifics in public," an update reads on the Wildman Kickstarter page. "We are profoundly grateful to those of you who backed this project and Gas Powered Games. Your passion and hard work put us in a position to write this exciting new chapter in the history of GPG."

GPG studio head Chris Taylor (along with Star Citizen's Chris Roberts) joined us on the Super Joystiq Podcast during last week's DICE conference to discuss his experience with crowdfunding.

SimCity's second beta assembles Feb. 16:

If you missed out on the first SimCity beta, you'll be pleased to know EA has laid the foundations for a second closed beta, starting February 16. The publisher tells us the second edition features an "enhanced" version of the one hour's worth of city planning featured in the first one.

The beta begins at 9AM ET (6AM PT, 2PM British) on February 16, and runs through 24 hours until February 17. The deadline for sign-ups is 9AM ET on Monday February 11. The game proper launches in North America on March 5, which is when you can get your hands on its Limited Edition, as zanily promoted in the new trailer above.

Newell: Valve looking to make Portal or Half-Life movie with J.J. Abrams

Newell: Valve looking to make Portal or Half-Life movie with J.J. Abrams:
Newell Valve looking to make Portal or HalfLife move with JJ Abrams
During today's DICE keynote conversation between movie director J.J. Abrams and Valve co-founder Gabe Newell, the latter noted a collaboration he's looking forward to making a reality if possible.

"We're going to try and figure out if we can make a Half-Life movie or a Portal movie together," said Gabe Newell.

The two sparred on storytelling methods in movies and film, and used scenes from each other's work to illustrate how player agency can augment storytelling, and how films can use "forced" foreshadowing to set up later events. According to the creative pair, they wanted to pursue this dialogue more seriously, and now hope to collaborate on a film based in some way on Half-Life or Portal.

There are no details available beyond this brief announcement, likely because the process is still in its early stages.

The Turret Anthem demonstrates why Source Filmmaker is a good thing

Valve's Source Filmmaker allows ordinary people to create outstanding things. One of the most recent testaments to Source Filmmaker's brilliance is The Turret Anthem, a song and video put together by Zachariah Scott, composer Lars Erik Fjosne and sound designer JP Neufeld. Enjoy.
